Editing a Builder Template File

Modified on Tue, 10 Dec at 12:15 PM

ABOUT BUILDER:  At this time, Builder is available to selected pilot customers only. However, all customers will be able to access Builder soon. To learn more about this new product, contact your customer success manager or submit a Customer Support ticket. Information in this article may still be in development.

You can edit your Actionstep Builder templates to make changes to the text of the document as well as the Builder components.

Once you create a template and it has been added to Builder, the template actually resides in Builder. This means that to edit the Builder template, you must open it and save it using the options available on the Builder ribbon. Additionally, you can save a copy of the template to your hard drive, but as you work in it, it must be synced to Builder. You can know it's synced by looking at the template name in the Word Designer pane:

To open a template for editing:

  1. Open a blank Microsoft Word document.
  2. Click the Builder tab.
  3. Click Sign In. The Word Designer pane appears.
  4. If needed, click Sign in with Microsoft and enter any requested credentials.
  5. When the list of next steps appears, click Choose an existing template to edit, followed by the name of the template you want to edit.
TIP:  Templates are categorized by catalog (or matter type) so you’ll see templates grouped under these catalog names. You can use the Search box to search for a template as well.
A separate, unnamed Word document is opened, showing the copy of the template that has been saved to Builder. You can close the first Word window you opened.
  6. Complete any of the following tasks:

TIP:  If you are already working with an existing Builder template and you want to edit a different template, click Open on the Builder ribbon and choose the template you want to edit. If you want to create a new template, click New on the Builder ribbon.

To close a template:

  1. When you are finished working in a template and need to close it, click the Save button on the Builder ribbon. This will save the template and all the variables to Builder.
  2. Optionally, to save a backup copy of the template file you’ve been working in to your hard drive, click Word’s Save button.
Note that for each Builder session, you may be prompted to provide a filename when you save or close the template. (Follow the instructions for doing so in the Microsoft Word Help.)
  3. Click Sign Out on the Builder ribbon to close Builder.
