TIP:  This report includes information about the responsible lawyer. To learn more about this role in billing, see Understanding the 'Responsible Lawyer' Role in Actionstep Billing.

Brief Description

The Detailed WIP Report provides an in-depth overview of all your work that is in progress. The report displays values for fees and expenses (disbursements) that have yet to be billed.

Use Cases

Use this report to see the amounts that can or will be billed in the future. It shows the value of unbilled fees and expenses by a client, matter, matter type, responsible lawyer, and/or bill type.

NOTE:  If you are looking for a report that will show the WIP that was not billed for a time period  (including WIP that has since been billed), use the Aged WIP Report.

Finding and Using the Report

  • In Actionstep, go to Reports > Billing > General

Then, refer to these articles for help generating and saving reports for future use:

Report Output

Depending on which Layout Options you selected for your report filters (on the Advanced tab), this report can include multiple tables. Each of these tables includes the following data:

  • For each report, the first column shows data relevant to the report type.
  • Hours - Worked: Shows the number of hours worked for the time record that is unbilled.
  • Hours Unbilled: Shows the hours to be recorded for the time record that is unbilled.
  • Total Unbilled $– Amount: Shows the billable value of the unbilled time record. Note that a time record with the bill behavior of Hide or No Charge may have value but no billable value shown in this report.

Additional Notes

The report only shows the current unbilled WIP as at today's date. For example, if you run the report on 5 August for the date ending 31 July, any WIP that has been billed between the 31st and the 5th will no longer show in the report. The best option for historical WIP reporting is to run the report at the end of every month to keep as a comparable.
