Brief Description
This report provides a statement of Financial Performance (Profit and Loss) for the selected participants for a given period or selection of periods. The report can create comparative report periods.
Use Cases
Because it drills down to and shows a separate total for each income account, this report is useful to see in which areas your fee earners are performing the best.
Finding and Using the Report
- In Actionstep, go to Reports > Accounting Reports > Participant.
Then, refer to these articles for help generating and saving reports for future use:
Available Filters
The report is based on the contact who is loaded against the matter (note that it cannot be run on who the matter is assigned to).
- Period: Choose the date range you want included in the report.
- Output Columns: Choose how you want data in the report organized: By month, By financial quarter, or By financial year. You can also choose Default, which displays the data based on the date range that was selected without dividing the information into columns (yearly, quarterly, or monthly).
- Level of nested accounts: Choose the level of detail you want included in the report. You would normally set this to the maximum selection of 4. If you were to choose 1, for example, you would only see the header accounts with no details in relation to child accounts. There is a maximum of 4 nested accounts that can be shown in this report.
- Show zero value accounts: Select this option to show income and expense accounts with zero value.
- Show account numbers: Select this option to include account numbers in the report.
- Matter Types: Choose the matter types you want included in the report.
- Participant Type: Choose the type of participants you want included in the report, and then select the specific Participant.
Report Output
This report shows the total income by participant for the date range you specified. Depending on your Output Columns selection, it can split this data into columns based on the monthly, yearly or quarterly. Each GL account is reported in its own section for each participant type/participant.
You can click one of the links in the report to view the Account Entries Report which shows all the entries between the selected date range for all contacts.
Additional Notes
You can choose to run the report based on any matter that a contact is listed as a participant on or you can use specific roles that might apply. For instance, if you wanted to get an indication of how much had been billed to a client, you could filter by matters where the contact was put against a matter in the Client role. Of, if you wanted to see how much each of your lawyers has earned, you can load them as contacts and choose the Lawyer Participant role.
You can choose to add more than one contact to the report which will allow you to do a comparison but it is worthwhile noting that the amounts for each contact are not mutually exclusive. For example, if you set the report to show income for two contacts, if there was a matter where both contacts were assigned, the income for that matter would count towards both. To split the income between system users, try using the income split function.
